A residential unit in Kuwait was having problems with structural stability.  C3S was contracted to provide concrete consulting services to determine the cause of the durability problems. Two concrete cores taken from two areas of the residential unit were couriered to our laboratory for evaluation.  Concrete from the two areas of the house were alleged to have been supplied by two ready mixed companies at two distinct time periods.

Bulk evaluation and petrographic analysis revealed the following:

  • The principal cause of the low compressive strength in the two cored samples is due to:
  • High water content - there is sufficient evidence that the concrete was re-tempered.
  • Weathered chert aggregate.
  • Presence of large air voids in both concrete samples.
