Concrete Failure Analysis: Alkali-Silica Reactivity (ASR)

Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a major cause of damage to concrete infrastructure. ASR manifests itself primarily as cracks but also shows as weakened section in coarse aggregates in the concrete. Proper concrete materials testing by an expert can help isolate the causes of the potential defects.

ASR occurs in concrete structures when a combination of the following three factors is present:

  1. A high alkali content in the cement used;
  2. A finely divided crystalline form of silica in the aggregate;
  3. The presence of high moisture.
